How does a doctor make an ADHD diagnosis?

There is no single test that can determine if your child has ADHD. To evaluate your child for ADHD, your child's doctor will need to gather information about your child, his or her behavior, and family and medical history.

The doctor must also rule out other reasons for your child's symptoms. Certain situations, events, or health problems can cause symptoms similar to ADHD.

Information that may be needed for an ADHD evaluation:
  • FROM THE FAMILY
    • Main concerns
    • History of symptoms (eg, when they began and how often they occur)
    • Family history (eg, history of ADHD, mental illness, or learning disabilities)
    • Other medical conditions (eg, sleeping problems, anxiety, and mood disorders)
    • Completed parent questionnaires
  • FROM THE SCHOOL
    • Main concerns
    • Report on how your child performs academically and socially
    • Academic records (eg, report cards and standardized tests)
    • Administrative reports (eg, disciplinary actions)
    • Completed teacher questionnaires
  • FROM THE CHILD
    • Main concerns
    • Self assessments
    • Healthcare professional's observation of child's behavior
    • Physical and neurological exam
